Well, you see, there are these aliens - and as many aliens seem
to want to do, they want to study humans. To achieve this, they
take the form of humans themselves - a "typical" American
family called the Solomons. They then meld effortlessly into human
society to observe us. Well, that was the plan, anyway... As this
is an excellent comedy series, there are many misunderstandings,
strange happenings, other aliens popping in, and of course finding
out all the very weird things that we humans do on a daily basis!
The Solomons are:
Dick (John Lithgow - showing that top film actors can happily
do TV) - he becomes a Physics Professor teaching a class who don't
understand him. As the High Commander of the mission, he gets to
order the others around - which they don't always appreciate!
Sally (delectable Kristen Johnston) becomes the 'sister' of Dick.
She is technically the Security Officer (and occasionally gets to
kick ass), but has to deal with all the concepts associated with
being in a human female body in our society...
Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) suffers the indignity of taking on
the body of a young male - who has to go to school. Particularly
annoying (until he gets a girlfriend) as he is actually older than
'Dick'.
Harry (French Stewart) is just a little weird, though naturally
cooler than Dick. He has a slightly different perception and tends
to go for all those obsessions humans love, like TV...
Dick shares an office with Dr. Mary Albright (Jane Curtin) and
they become strangely, romantically connected. Their ever-suffering
and sensible assistant is Nina Campbell (Simbi Khali). Landlady
to the Solomons is Mrs Mamie Dubcek (Elmarie Wendel) who is eccentric
enough to cope with the strange family. Police Officer Don Orville
(Wayne Knight) joined the team as Sally's love interest - a dangerous
association when you don't want to be discovered as aliens...
The head honcho from their Home Planet is "The Big Giant Head"
- when he eventually appears in person on occasion, he looks just
like William Shatner.
