The Avengers and The New Avengers. Not science fiction as such,
but some of the stories most definitely fall into the "science
fiction" category and even more that can certainly be termed
"fantasy" and all of it tongue in cheek espionage. What
really matters is a legacy of many, many years of wonderful television
series'.
Starting way back in 1961, John Steed (Patrick Macnee) was the
most classic of British secret agents who are just a little beyond
the norm. With style, wit, intelligence, charm and plenty of savoir
faire, Steed totally rules. He did not do so on his own though and
successive series paired him up with smart, beautiful, and equally
charming ladies. Any action ladies of today should take a good look
at their heritage in Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), Emma Peel (Diana
Rigg), Tara King (Linda Thorson) and Purdey (Joanna Lumley). The
Avengers started even before the series of James Bond films, and
possibly the most striking difference is that, unlike Bond, the
ladies in The Avengers were always treated as equals - intelligent,
talented and action oriented in their own right.
We'll be expanding this section quite considerably in the future,
but for now, please check out the links to the left. And if you
have neer seen The Avengers, please make every effort to do so.
The Avengers is one of the all time greatest television series ever
made. Oh, and about that movie - best forgotten really, as it so
completely missed the target.
