Johfra (1919 - 1998)
This portrait was taken by Jesse Haye in February 1998, at Johfra's home in Fleurac. it was originally intended for his autobiography "Symphony Fantastique", a small paperback that came out later that year. However Ellen Lorien asked if it could be used by Gerrit Luidinga, for his wonderful hardcover book "Hoogste lichten en diepsteschaduwen" instead. This is my small tribute to Johfra, an artist who, in my view, has captured the essence of each Astrological sign more than anyone else. It is now literally decades since I bought my own Johfra poster and wherever I have lived, it always finds a place on the wall. This is because Johfra hasn't just painted some pretty scenes that have a few elements associated with each zodiac sign. He has completely captured the essence of each sign in the detail of each picture. It is when you really look into the details of each painting that you see an incredible depth of imagery, hidden signs and symbols.
In my small tribute on the Web, I can only provide you with relatively small images at low resolution that can just about give the barest of impressions of what the works are really like. It is only at poster size that you can see the full detail and fantastic imagery hidden in all of these pictures. I can't provide higher quality images because I don't have copyright permission to do so. Reproduction copyright probably remains with the original poster printers, Verkerke Reprodukties NV, though they don't seem to be available any more. If I can find somewhere where the posters are currently for sale, I will provide the links.
